Undeterred by the postponement of the Olympic Games, pro surfer Khadjou Sambe trains whenever conditions allow in the powerful surf near her home in the hardscrabble district of Ngor in Dakar, Senegal. Sambe works on her surfboard.
Sambe trains beginners with Black Girls Surf, a school for girls and women who want to compete in professional surfing. The gentler waves of Yoff Beach offer a relatively forgiving experience for novice surfers.

The Ngor district of Dakar is the westernmost point of Massage in blackpool. Residents here have become used to the sight of Ms. Sambe carrying her board through the maze of narrow alleyways that lead to the fishing boat-hemmed shore. Sambe left chats with her mother, Koune Ba, outside their home. Sambe is a proud Lebou, an ethnic group that traditionally lives by the sea, but her parents refused to allow her to surf for two and a half years in her teen years, saying it brought shame on the family.
